Carla had poured out two-thirds of the apple juice from a 1-literpack to a glass. What is the quantity of juice in the glass?
Solution
The fractions are referred to with the ‘parts out of the whole’. Here the amount of juice that Carla had poured in the glass is two-thirds, which is two parts out of three. This can be written as a fraction as $$\frac23$$.
To find the quantity of juice in the glass, we must convert the fraction to decimal.
To convert a fraction to the decimal form, the numerator should be divided by the denominator.
Here the numerator is 2, which is the dividend and the denominator is 3, which is the divisor.
Note that the division can be stopped once the remainder is repeated since it will give the same digits in the quotient.
Here the quotient we get is 0.666….
This can be written as $$\mathbf0\boldsymbol.\overset{\boldsymbol¯}{\mathbf6}$$.
Hence the quantity of juice in the glass is $$\mathbf0\boldsymbol.\overset{\boldsymbol¯}{\mathbf6}$$ liter.
