Solution
To simplify a fraction, it can be converted to the decimal form using the long division method.
The fraction consists of the number of parts, which is denoted by the numerator on the top, and the total number of parts, which is denoted by the denominator.
To arrive at a decimal value of the given fraction we divide the numerator 15 by the denominator 32.
The fractions that have the numerator value less than the denominator value are called proper fractions and have the decimal value less than 1. Hence the decimal value of these fractions starts with 0….., as their value is less than 1.
Carry out the division as given below:
It should be noted that the zeros (marked in red) are the zeros that are added at every step to make the value divisible by 32. It can be added only after placing a decimal point in the quotient.
We can see that the last remainder becomes 0 and the division cannot be continued further. Hence the quotient, 0.46875 is the answer.
